  • During the first week when neither group received CO₂ enrichment, the CO₂ group (green graph) showed those plants being more CO₂ limited and less light limited than the control group (blue graph).

  • During the subsequent three weeks when aqueous CO₂ enrichment was applied to the treatment group, the green graph went below the blue graph, indicating the treated plants were now less CO₂ limited and more light limited than the control plants.

  • During the subsequent three weeks when aqueous CO₂ enrichment was applied to the treatment group, the green graph went above the blue graph, indicating the treated plants were now more efficiently using the available light than the control plants.

  • Light Use Efficiency is a measure of how efficient the plant uses the light that it receives for photosynthesis versus wasting that light energy as heat.

  • More CO₂ means more of the light can be used for photosynthesis versus producing heat which the plant removes as waste.
